Introducing: Ivy Rose... "It's a Serious Matter"

Does Barbie have what it takes to join the pretty girls who wear 20 pearls?

Toymaker Mattel has made a special collectible Barbie to mark the centennial of the oldest black sorority in the United States.

The first in a series of Greek Lettered Organizations inspired dolls, IVY ROSE is an artistic representation of beauty, elegance and grace. Each aspect of the Ivy Rose doll has been meticulously considered to present a radiant vision of this organization and what it has evolved into over the past century. Ivy Rose is adorned with pearl earrings and a necklace of precisely Twenty Pearls to commemorate each of the sorority’s founders and incorporators. Her dress is an original design that elegantly combines the sorority’s colors with a border of ivy and pink tea roses.

The sorority, headquartered in Chicago, was founded on Jan. 15, 1908, at Howard University in Washington.

The Barbie is Mattel's first tied to a sorority and also to a black group. Elizabeth Grampp, head of Barbie collector marketing, said the company decided to submit a bid when it learned of the centennial. Alpha Kappa Alpha begins its celebrations Saturday. The doll will be available through the Barbie Collector catalog and through the sorority at a price of about $50.
