Shaun Robinson's Book Club Party

A rather novel way our club grew out of a birthday party held at the Hollywood Hills home of a television producer. When a few guests collected in the home library, not surprisingly, the talk turned to books. It became so animated that someone suggested forming a reading group. A copy of 'In the Meantime' by Iyanla Vanzant was sitting on a nearby table, and the title became the name of the just-formed club. Eight years later, the group has grown to 22 women.
Along with Denise Gordy, I am now a cochair. I typically use e-mail to get the word out about the when and where of the gatherings as well as what to read. And during meetings, the cochairs help initiate the discussion. Unlike many clubs, we don't have a moderator or facilitator; the women in our group are not the type to raise their hands and wait to be called on. We are outspoken and opinionated, but never judgmental. We absolutely adore reading, talking about plots and characters, and offering our viewpoints, but the club has become about more than books. When we come together it's a fellowship. Food adds a delightful dimension. The host will cook or have the event catered, or sometimes it's potluck. After drinks, appetizers and a light buffet, then the literary dialogue begins. But at times we don't even crack a book. We've had parties in restaurants, tried pole dancing, and traveled to New York to see The Color Purple. Because of the demands of my career, it's important for me to spend time with people I truly enjoy. The book club is my way to unwind with smart, supportive women who bring a lot to the table. Ours is a sisterhood of wonderful spirits.
