After 8 successful seasons on UPN and now The CW, the network has abruptly decided to cancel "Girlfriends" leaving all the storylines hanging in the balance, and without letting it have a proper series finale. It has been a positive show that has touched the African-American community. We all know that everything will come to end, but we ask that the CW gives us closure by having a proper series finale. E3 reported yesterday that Girlfriends has officially been cancelled and the network is not even planning to shoot a finale episode. And now another source involved in the production of Girlfriends says that the production team was in the process of bring back Jill Marie Jones (Toni Childs) for this year’s season/series finale. The source says this is critical to inform people of because ”Toni Childs” leaving is the biggest complaint that the cast and crew have encountered about the show and one that they would have answered had they been given the opportunity. Bringing Jill back was something they wanted to do for a long time and there was a story arc in place that was going to include that in the season finale.
Also, Girlfriends was one year away from being the longest running African American sitcom in television history. Longer than Fresh Prince Of Bel Air, Martin, A Different World, etc. It is currently tied for longest running African American sitcom of all time with The Cosby Show. And the source says that ninth year was something Mara Brock Akil (the show’s creator and executive producer) really wanted to accomplish and something that the team feels they should have been given an opportunity to do.
The source is so adamant about readers, watchers, and fans demanding that this show get its proper due, they sent over the DIRECT contact info for the offices of head execs in charge. Tonight’s brand new back to back episodes were and will be the final episodes ever. And the network is not even planning to tape a series finale. The decision was made very last minute which is why these final episode were not advertised as such.
Months ago reports stated that this would likely be the last season, but this abrupt ending was not expected. Girlfriends will indeed NOT be returning to the CW at all after these back to back episodes that aired tonight. The source says the entire cast and crew are “extremely hurt and saddened by this news.” Apparently, they want the fans of the show to make some noise about this situation so that Girlfriends can at least shoot a proper finale.

As E3 reported yesterday, soulful siren Chrisette Michele is set to make a cameo on an episode of ‘Girlfriends’ next week. The episode, which was directed by series star Tracee Ellis Ross, features a new song from Chrisette.

In the Tracee Ellis Ross-directed episode, "What's Black-A-Lacking?" Lynn (Persia White) gets upset when she learns that her record label is pushing back the release of her album to promote another artist, Chrisette Michele (guest starring as herself). When Lynn confronts the record label, they tell her they are concerned about how to market her because they feel she is not "black" enough. Trace Ellis Ross directed the episode written by Michele Mar burger and Kevin Mar burger.
